“Large toy brands are lagging behind in sustainability,” says BioBuddi as ten millionth plant-based toy is sold

Dutch toy brand BioBuddi has called out large toy brands for taking small steps in sustainability, as it celebrates the sale of its ten millionth toy block to be made out of plant material.

It follows a recent move from the European Commission to take the next step in its plastic strategy and reduce its use while encourage the use of sustainable plastic alternatives.

BioBuddi responded to the call with the launch of its range of toy blocks made from side waste of the sugar can plant, targeting the one to five year old age range.

BioBuddi;’s efforts are made in collaboration with several partners in the field of biobased materials, including the University of Wageningen in the Netherlands. At the beginning of 2018, the university and the firm teamed up to make the blocks of high quality. The university is heralded as one of the frontrunners in research on biobased materials and products.

BioBuddi CEO, Steven van Bommel, said: “BioBuddie gives parents the peace of mind that the toys they give to their children aren’t harmful to the environment. In toy retail, BioBuddi is one of the few companies that has actively dedicated itself to becoming the most sustainable and eco-friendly brand in the marketplace.

“The big brands in toys are lagging behind and making very small steps. We at BioBuddi are dedicated to only selling toys with a lot less footprint on our planet.”

BioBuddi was founded in 2017 and has now sold ten million toy blocks. It now has high hopes for the near future. Over the next year, the brand wants to see the number of toy blocks sold pass 100 million.
