Mattel greenlights new series of revamped Thomas & Friends

Mattel has just greenlit the 23 series of its popular pre-school show Thomas & Friends, a run of 20 episodes scheduled to hit screens in 2019.

The series will feature three 22 minute specials and 20 11-minute regular episodes that will continue the themes of exploration and discovery, while adding new locations and friends from around the world.

The new series will bring the total Thomas & Friends content library to over 550 episodes and follows a major revamp for the brand through series 22. The re-energised series has recently been signed up by broadcasters Channel 5 Milkshake, ABC TV, Televisa, TV Cultura, Super RTL and Nick Jr, making it a show of global proportions.

The show now boasts a more contemporary feel, a new theme tune and a refreshed Steam Team to include three girls and three boy engines. The series also aims to deliver fast-paced action, increased humour, new music, new international friends, animals and fantasy elements.

Kate Schlomann, VP & global brand general manager, Thomas & Friends, said: “The reaction from broadcasters, licensees and partners to our revamped content has been incredibly positive and has proven appetite for the new series rolling out this year, so we are delighted to keep this momentum going with all-new content for 2019, which really cements the brand direction for the franchise.”

Thomas the Tank Engine was created over 70 years ago in a story that quickly became the award-winning leading pre-school brand it is today. The franchise sells one engine every second and is enjoyed across 160 territories and in over 55 languages.
