The FA and Hasbro in talks to launch ladies’ Subbuteo sets to retail

Hasbro is said to be in discussion with The FA to bring the first ever ladies’ Subbuteo set to shop shelves across the UK.

The Football Association has urged the games maker to start selling is women’s Subbuteo sets in the group’s latest bid to drive interest in women’s sport.

In a move which will see female players on the Subbuteo board for the first time in the game’s 70 year history, Hasbro has created a run of 100 limited edition sets.

However, the sets are not currently available to the general public. Hasbro and The FA are now in talks around bringing the sets to shop shelves, the FA confirmed, but no agreement has been reached.

The FA said it wanted to ‘tackle barriers’ within the women’s game, which is still far less popular than men’s football, although gaining in popularity and despite the England’s Women’s team outperforming the Men’s in cup tournaments.

Last year England’s crunch Euro 2017 semi-final against Holland drew the biggest UK audience for women’s football to date, with a peak audience of four million tuning in to Channel 4 to watch.

There are reports that gender inequality in football is more entrenched than in politics, business, medicine and space exploration.

Hasbro’s limited edition ladies’ Subbuteo box places female footballers at the front and centre. The set will be donated to local football clubs and will be handed out as prizes on the FA’s social media channels.

Marzena Bogdanowicz, The FA’s head of marketing and commercial for Women’s Football, said: “This new all-female Subbuteo set is a refelction of the rapid growth that women’s football is seeing in the UK right now. We aspire to greater equality all the way from board games to board rooms, and every day, striving to transform the future of the women’s game on and off the pitch.”

James Walker, senior vice president at Hasbro, added: “We are incredibly excited to work with The FA to place focus on female footballers in this special edition of Subbuteo.

“Subbuteo has a rich heritage that reflects the nation’s love of football and this all-female play-set is recognition of the vital role that women’s football has in our culture.”
