Sonic the Hedgehog moves from video games to board games in new Kickstarter project

Video gaming icon, Sonic the Hedgehog is making the transition to board gaming thanks to a new Kickstarter project based on the popular Sega franchise.

Sonic the Hedgehog: Battle Racers is a strategic game designed for two to five players and will allow fans to take on the role of Sonic or his friends in a race to the finish of the game.

Developed by Shinobi 7, a prolific tabletop game company, the Sonic the Hedgehog: Battle Racers Kickstarter project will launch in early February. A retail version of the game will be available in the back half of 2018 and will be distributed exclusively to all channels by Diamond/Alliance.

The base game will feature five full colour miniatures of Sonic, Knuckles, Amy, Tails and Dr Eggman. Also included are a variety of colourful cards, tokens and race tracks.

Each expansion set will contain one pre-painted character miniature and their racer profile, while larger expansions will also be available and will include additional track sections. All miniatures will be 40mm scale.

"Our whole team grew up loving Sonic. SEGA has been amazing to work with and their passion for Sonic has really helped make this project exciting," said Rob Stoddard from Shinobi 7.

"We believe strongly that other fans will love this game as much as we do."

Michael Cisneros, licensing specialist, SEGA of America, added: "From the beginning, Shinobi 7’s enthusiasm for the project was palpable.

"The plan to launch the game via Kickstarter makes perfect sense in that the fans can directly affect how robust the final game will turn out to be."
