Batman tops best-selling list as superhero toy sales exceed £200m

The Caped Crusader has trounced his rivals across the DC and Marvel universes in the battle for popularity in the toy market.

The NPD Group has revealed that Batman has emerged as the top-selling superhero in toy market in the 12 months ending July 1st, 2017, a category that has seen sales exceed £200m.

The LEGO: Batman movie helped drive sales for Gotham’s hero, propelling LEGO Minifigures to the number one best-selling superhero toy to July 1st this year.

Now, with a slate of superhero movies on the horizon, the NPD Group is expecting to see superhero toy sales break new records by the end of the year, with a spike in sales predicted to emerge from the cinematic release of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Transformers: The Last Knight, LEGO Ninjago, DC Comics’ Justice League and more.

“Superheroes have an enduring appeal for kids,” said Frederique tutt, global industry analyst, toys, NPD.

“It’s fascinating to see long-standing characters like Batman and Spider-Man resonate as well with today’s kids as they did with their parents all those years ago.

“The recent growth of superhero toy sales has been spurred on by a number of factors. These include the move by big studios to bring superheroes together in one film, such as The Avengers. With the globe, they’ve also become part of kids’ everyday life.

“What’s more, movie studios are finally addressing the often overlooked female superheroes fanbase with theatrical releases such as this year’s Wonder Woman.”
