G.I. Joe creator Stanley Weston dies at 84

Stanley Weston, the originator of the action figure concept and co-creator of G.I. Joe has passed away at 84.

Weston conceptualised the G.I. Joe concept after his time serving in the military and sold it to the predecessor of Hasbro, which the Los Angeles Times reports netted him only $100,000.

Hasbro coined the name and marketing strategy for the product, developing it into a worldwide brand that would eventually encompass the Action Man label here in the UK. The franchise went on to spawn cartoons and Hollywood blockbuster movies.

Weston later sued Hasbro claiming ownership for the G.I. Joe brand. The suit was settled last year.

Weston was considered an influential figure in the toys industry and has been inducted into both the Licensing Industry Hall of Fame and the National Toy Hall of Fame in the US.
