LEGO Batman beats 50 Shades Darker to top box office spot

LEGO’s take on the caped crusader soared to number one in the US box office this weekend, beating out S&M thriller 50 Shades Darker and action sequel John Wick: Chapter 2.

The LEGO Batman Movie took the top spot with an impressive gross of $55.6m, beating out 50 Shades’ $46.8m, according to studio estimates.

The spin-off of 2015’s LEGO Movie, benefitted from a lack of competition in the family film space and was boosted by outstanding critic reception. The film currently sits at a certified fresh 91% on movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Showing no signs of slowing down, LEGO has recently revealed the first trailer for its next movie spin-off, The LEGO Ninjago Movie, which will hit theaters in September. A sequel to The LEGO Movie is expected to launch in 2019.
