Board games rivalling sales of science kits at Thames & Kosmos

Award nominations and sell out success of some hit titles has helped Thames & Kosmos gain traction as one of the UK’s leading tabletop game suppliers.

Fresh from this year’s UK Game Expo, the educational specialist – who turned to distributing titles such as Imhotep, Ubongo and Dimension last year – reveals that its portfolio of tabletop games is now outpacing some of its most popular science kits.

The Spiel Des Jahres-nominated Imhotep has jumped to the top of the firm’s leader board for board gaming titles, having become the company’s sell out success of the year.

Thames and Kosmos has tripled its game offering with more launches on the way, as well as a new shipment of the Imhotep game arriving this September.

“Considering we have only been selling board games for a year we have been really pleased with the sales,” Emma Hanlon, account manager at Thames & Kosmos, told ToyNews.

"Some of our games titles are even outselling our popular science kits.

“We were initially slightly nervous that we wouldn’t be recognised as a credible tabletop supplier. Fortunately our offering includes titles from leading authors, while Imhotep has helped the games side of the business grow enormously.”

An umbrella of Kosmos, one of the largest game publishers in Europe, Thames & Kosmos now finds itself well positioned within the market.

“Now that Imhotep has been nominated for Spiel des Jahres, we are seeing sales rocket for all the titles," added Hanlon.

"It was interesting seeing people light up at the UK Games Expo when they realised we were the UK distributors for Kosmos. Hopefully these people will now go to their local games shop and request titles that had previously been left off the shelf.”

Spurred by the positive reception to the games portfolio over the last year, Hanlon has teased that more titles will be launched over the next year, including Kosmos favourites that have been out of publication for a while.
