Sales of Hasbro’s Chewbacca mask soar as ‘Chewbacca Mom’ video goes viral

A video of a woman laughing hysterically while wearing one of Hasbro’s Chewbacca masks has gone viral, leading retailers across the US to sell out of the product.

The Facebook Live video of Candace Payne trying on the mask has broken the record as the most-watched Facebook Live video ever, and has had over 91 million views.

Since the video went viral, retailers have sold out of the product, including the original store where Payne purchased the mask, Kohl’s.

"We have received an overwhelming amount of interest in the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Chewbacca Electronic Mask by Hasbro since Candace posted her funny and lighthearted video," a Kohl’s spokeswoman told CNBC.

The mask is also sold out at Target, Walmart and Toys R Us.

It’s not the first time that a video going viral has led to a spike in sales for Hasbro, as the success of Pie Face (and Hasbro acquring the game from Rocket) stemmed from a home video of the game in action becoming an online sensation.
