Tesco sees UK Christmas sales increase 1.3 per cent

Tesco is celebrating ‘strong Christmas’ results after UK sales rose 1.3 per cent on a like-for-like basis in the six weeks ending January 9th.

Chief executive Dave Lewis has accredited the positive Christmas period to lower prices and an increase in staff in stores.

However, following a reported fall in sales of 1.4 per cent for the 13 weeks ending November 28th after scrapping its “£5 off £40” promotion held in 2014, Lewis has said ‘there is plenty more to do.’

Tesco’s total group sales also rose over the six-week Christmas period, increasing 2.1 per cent on the same period last year.

However, group sales for the quarter were down 0.5 per cent.

“Our Christmas performance was strong,” said Lewis in a statement. “There is plenty more to, but we are making progress and are trading in line with profit expectations for the full year.”

Last April, Tesco reported the worst results in its history, with a record statutory pre-tax loss of £6.4bn for the year to the end of February.

However, Lewis told the BBC in October that he was “quietly confident” about Tesco’s turnaround.

The company said that its price cuts and 4,000 additional ‘Here to Help’ staff in stores had been key to the sales improvement over Christmas.

The supermarket said that clothing sales over the period performed particularly well, growing ‘significantly ahead of the market.’
