Star Wars fans ask #WheresRey? among latest line of merchandise

Star Wars: The Force Awakens may have smashed nearly every box office record going since its release, but there remains a disturbance in the force.

Namely – and a matter that has been picked up on by the internet’s legions of Star Wars fans – a lack of the film’s lead character Rey among the franchise’s latest merchandise roll-out.

The most recent to fall foul of the Star Wars fandom’s gaze is a new Star Wars themed Monopoly that features the characters Finn, Kylo Ren, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, but no Rey.

According to The Guardian, the board game is the latest in a line of official merchandise that has ‘drawn ire for prioritising characters less prominent within Star Wars: The Force Awakens over Rey.’

Others include the official Star Wars: The Force Awakens Millenium Falcon play-set that features a Chewbacca figurine, Finn and the movie’s new droid BB-8, as well as a Star Wars figurine pack that included six characters: Kylo Ren, Chewbacca, Finn, Poe Dameron, a Stormtrooper and a TIE Fighter pilot.

Played by Daisy Ridley, Rey is a central character in the latest chapter of the Star Wars saga that hit the $1.5bn mark at the global box office this weekend.

However, and countering the argument for the new Star Wars Monopoly, the Hasbro website states that the new game includes two Rebel and two Empire character tokens, and draws from the entire Star Wars legacy, not just the newest film.

Meanwhile, a trending hashtag #WheresRey has been charting the absence of Rey from chain store shelves selling the film’s official merchandise.

However, in an interview with The Daily Beast, Disney promised that the unmet demand for Rey merchandise will be addressed with a release of new toy lines this month.

Disney’s senior vice president and head of licensing for Lucasfilm, Paul Southern also stated that in many stores, products featuring Rey are selling ‘as quickly as retailers can restock the shelves.’

“Rey and Phasma feature prominently across hundreds of products, and are selling exceptionally well,” said Southern.

“Fans will also be seeing a lot more of Rey with a new wave of product coming in January.”
