Steve Schrier, owner and founder of Straight Up Chess, has taken the classic game and turned it on its head. Literally.

DIARY OF AN INVENTOR: Steve Schrier and Straight Up Chess

I had a large chess set that was in the way in my office and I was figuring out where to put it.

In the process, I came up with this idea for Straight Up Chess.

I looked around online and didn’t see anything like it. So I started to develop it, I then got the patent for it and I’ve been selling them for seven years now.

The look of them have evolved in that time.

Initially, they didn’t look as good as they do now because I pitched it as a square. But I found that the pieces just didn’t fit with the square.

As well as being a unqiue way to play chess, people have also been buying them for their offices because it makes them look smarter!
