The Entertainer’s Terry Smith departs after 49 years in toys

Toy industry and retail veteran, Terry Smith is hanging up his apron after 49 years of service.

Smith spent the last nine years of his career as senior supervisor at The Entertainer’s Beaconsfield store, and having worked at toy retail for almost half a century, has become a familiar face among the toy industry.

Having begun his career at the age of 15 as a Saturday boy at Cliftons in Bourne End, Buckinghamshire, Smith wnet on to manage the store in 1969. By 1973, he was manager of both Clifton’s Bourne End and Maidenhead branch, a position he held for 10 years.

In 2006, Smith went on to join The Entertainer in Beaconsfield as a sales assistant and swiftly moved up to senior supervisor, supporting the store manager, Sue Thorne.

"The store and the customers will miss him," said Thorne.

Smith added: "I am delighted I stayed in the toy industry which I love, but I’ve decided now is the time to see friends and family and do all the jobs I haven’t managed to do while at work. I will really miss the run up to Christmas after so many years selling toys to families.”

Gary Grant, Founder of TheEntertainer has thanked Smith for his years of service.

“Terry has been a huge asset to the toy industry over the years and will be sorely missed by both staff and customers alike at our Beaconsfield store," he said. " I wish him all the very best on his retirement.”
