Firebox.com has seen ‘absolutely phenomenal’ sales of the Sphero BB-8 droid, as Force Friday marked the retailer’s highest grossing 24 hours in 17 years.
Force Friday – the day marked for the official launch of the first Star Wars: The Force Awakens toys – saw a range of merchandise hit retailers across multiple categories.
However, it was the iOS and Android-controlled BB-8 that climbed to number one in the online retailer’s Top 50 chart.
The team now anticipated that the droid-drone will continue to be in high demand throughout the Christmas season.
Ben Redhead, head of buying at Firebox.com, said: “The response to BB-8 has been incredible.
“Within the first few hours of the product going live, we had almost sold out of our entire inventory, but luckily Sphero and our UK distributor Widget were able to restock us immediately and he droid continued to fly off the shelves.
“We had anticipated the high demand, as we’re well known for selling licensed film merchandise and also having worked with Sphero on their previous launched in the past, which is why we’d put such a focus behind BB-8, but sales were even better than we had ever expected.
“It’s been our fastest selling product launch since Firebox launched in 1998, which is staggering. The buzz from our customers has been absolutely phenomenal.”
