When I was studying for a Law degree, I was also working as a cab driver in my hometown of Portsmouth. It was whilst out on a shift that I had the idea for my board game Destination.
I had stopped at a red light and thought ‘red light miss a turn’ and that’s where the idea came from. I then made notes from my shift every time I went out in my cab, so everything within the game is drawn on my own experience as a cab driver.
The first game I created was actually Destination Portsmouth followed by Destination London.
I secured some initial funding through a university Enterprise Challenge but still needed more so I raised sponsorship by asking attractions, landmarks and businesses to feature as Destinations within the game.
I also applied for the first series of Dragons’ Den and got through to the live shows, where I was faced with a very tough panel!
My experience on the show was tough to say the least. I was rejected by the Dragons but this wasn’t going to stop me and I went on to launch the game in Hamley’s.
The game went on to become a bestseller, beating Monopoly and Twister to the hot spot!
The past ten years have been a rollercoaster ride to say the least.
I spent the first six years building my brand, only to be struck down by the recession in 2008 when a licensing deal went wrong which resulted in me losing everything I had ever worked for including my home.
Despite this set back, I’ve gone on to get the business back up and running again.
We proudly created a Harry Potter edition for the final film which was launched at the London Film Museum in 2011 and then went on to do two Olympic Games editions in 2012.
In 2013 we signed a contract with NBC Universal for Destination Downton Abbey for the UK and America and in 2014 we created Destination Great Britain which was sponsored by theme parks and national attractions.
For 2015 we have been working on the release of 13 special 10th Anniversary editions for different regions across the UK, so all in all keeping busy!
The 10th anniversary for the regional games is a lot of fun to do, especially in my home town of Portsmouth as it’s incredible to see how much the city has changed in the last 10 years!
I love working with my retailers and I still feel that sense of excitement and pride when I see one of my games on the shelf in a store.
The opportunities for Destination Board Games are endless, and I’m really excited for the future and what new versions of the game we can create.
