Chechen officials to launch toy line reflecting the region’s history

Officials in Chechnya are launching a new line of toys designed to represent Chechen folk heroes and historical figures.

BBC News reports that Khamzat Khirakhmatov, the Chechen Republic’s commissioner for children, believes Western imported toys, like those based on superhero franchises, are "figments of unhealthy imaginations" which can damage a child’s psyche.

To combat such imported toys, Khirakhmatov aims to replace them with ranges representing Chechen historical figures. This push will be backed by new cartoons and books about the republic’s history.

Nine prototype models are being created and a mass production of 10,000 toys is due to start in May.
