Devon’s first ever board game cafe opens in Exeter

A new board game cafe has opened in Exeter.

Board, run by siblings Luke and Beth Mildenhall-Ward, claims to be Devon’s first ever board game cafe.

Luke Mildenhall-Ward became friends with Sean Jacquemain, the manager of Toronto’s Snakes & Lattes and Snakes & Lagers games cafes, while working in Canada, and decided to bring the concept to Devon this year.

The cafe launched via Exeter Council’s Pop-Up Shop scheme, which sees the council trialling a business for three months in vacant city council owned premises.

If the test goes well, the cafe will be kept on as a permanent business.

"Concept cafes are cool ideas but can often feel a bit gimmicky – you might visit once but then feel like it’s done and tick it off your list," Beth Mildenhall-Ward told Exeter Express and Echo.

"The positive thing about us is there are so many different games for all kinds of people, so you can make endless visits – with co-workers, your family, or even a first date – and it will be a completely new experience each time.”
