Color Alive allows kids to photograph and virtually animate their creations before having them 3D printed.

Crayola teams with 3D Systems to bring drawings to life

Crayola has unveiled its latest initiative to bring art and crafts in to the 21st century, allowing kids to virtually animate and 3D print their own artwork.

The popular art brand has partnered with 3D Systems to launch Color Alive, a system that utilises mobile apps, photography and 3D printing technology.

Unveiled at CES 2015 – the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Tradeshow – through Color Alive, kids can download a free iOS or Android mobile app in order to photograph any of the images from Crayola’s Color Alive colouring books.

The books retail for $5.99 each and currently include titles such as: Mythical Creatures, Enchanted Garden, Skylanders and Barbie, with more on their way.

Crayola will also reportedly be bringing more characters from brands such as Disney in the near future, according to 3D

Once a picture is coloured, kids can take a picture of their creation, which the app will convert in to a 3D character. Users can then animate their character using augmented reality technology that will allow them to interact and take pictures with them.

Then things turn futuristic. Through the new partnership, users can bring their character to the physical world with a hit of a button via the Colour Alive app. The 3D printed character will then be delivered to the creator’s door.

Scheduled to launch in spring this year, the 3D printing service kicks off with the price of $50.

“At Crayola, we are all about inspiring creativity through colour and innovative play experiences,” said Mike Perry, president and chief executive officer, Crayola LLC.

“Children are incredibly digitally savvy and the offline experience continues to be so important because it allows kids to colour the world through their own imagination and bring it to life.

“Color Alive offers a truly unified creative experience that transforms the way that parents and kids think about colouring.”
