Mattel has launched a new Chinese Celebrity Barbie, welcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past actress Fan Bing Bing to its Hall of Fame.
The launch comes as part of Mattel’s plans to strengthen its position in the Chinese market.
The international actress, who has appeared in numerous films including Iron Man 3 is the first actress from China to join the Barbie global celebrity Hall of Fame.
Fan Bing Bing joins a roster including iconic names such as Cher, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe.
The new doll was launched at an event featuring Mattel and its long-term strategic partner, Toys R Us.
Jeff Wang, general manager of Mattel Greater China, said: “We feel that this Barbie is perfect for China because she encourages girls to realize their dreams and shine in their own way.
“Today we have an exceptionally talented, homegrown lady, who exemplifies this core idea.”
In an interview with Bloomberg, Wang, added: “To make Barbie more successful in China, we have to make this brand more relevant to Chinese girls.”
The push in the territory follows a recent downturn for the brand that saw its House of Barbie close down in 2011.
