Scotland Yard to raise funding through Bobby Bear sales

Scotland Yard is planning to sell a range of branded merchandise, including cuddly Bobby Bears to raise funds to support its policing activity.

LBC reports that interested firms will be invited to submit bids to run the online shop. The bidding competition will kick off next year with firms being asked to create and manage a web-based shop to sell the merchandise.

Although still in the planning and development stages, the initiative emerges following news that the Met could be privatising services worth up to £500 million in money saving attempts following the 20 per cent cut to budget.

A spokesperson from the Met, said: "Part of the reason for looking at this option would be to try to increase revenue from merchandise.

"The fee for providing the web based shop would be established in the tender process as part of the selection criteria.

"Profits of the sales of merchandise are returned to MPS budgets to support policing activity."

The range of branded merchandise and Bobby Bears currently retails at Scotland Yard’s dedicated shop at the Heritage Centre at Earls Court. Bobby Bear currently retails for £20.
