Scrabble Championship finalists found

After 58 competitors took part in the 42nd National Scrabble Championship semi-final in Cardiff on Sunday, the tournament has finally found its finalists.

The final game has left the competition with Allan Simmons (above, left) and Paul Allan (above, right) ready to battle it out at the five-game final held on Sunday November 3rd in London. The winner will recieve £2,500.

Paul Allan is a teacher from Rushden, Northamptonshire while Allan Simmons from Coldingham Village in the Scottish Borders is an actual Scrabble consultant.

The word that secured Allan’s place in the final was Naperies, a Scottish term for napkins, whilst Paul’s winning word was Wirildas, plural for Acacia tree.

Both have history with the competition as Simmons has competed at tournaments for 30 years and was crowned National Scrabble Champion in 2008, while Allan held the title in 2007.

On Saturday, Channel 4’s Countdown team were present, holding open auditions to find contestants who were willing to put their letter and number skills to the test, and Mind Sports Ambassador Rachel Riley was at the event on Sunday.
