US: “AI first” toy cars that drive themselves shown off at Apple Developers Conference

A set of toy cars boasting artificial intelligence (AI) have been shown off – cars which can detect one another and change speed and direction accordingly.

The RC-like Anki Drive products were presented at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2013, reports The Next Web. Using a tech track mat, the toy cars raced against one another by themselves.

The toy/game hybrid will launch this autumn, priced at around $200.

Co-founder of robotics and AI firm Anki, Mark Palatucci, says a smartphone handles the "positioning, reasoning and execution" of the toy cars, and that an "entire pipeline of products" is in the works.

The firm also says the robotic cars are an "AI company first".

The news comes after Anki secured $50 million in funding from Andreessen Horowitz, Index Ventures and Two Sigma.
