LEGO has approved a fan-designed Back to the Future set for production.

The DeLorean Time Machine set was devised on Lego Cuusoo, a website that allows people to suggest ideas that LEGO reviews and turns into real sets - like LEGO Minecraft.

LEGO chose the Back to the Future set as part of its Summer Review. It conducts these reviews every three months.

Back to the Future LEGO beat off stiff competition, including ideas for LEGO Legend of Zelda, EVE Online and a Modular Western Town play-set.

A statement from LEGO read: "It is with great pleasure we reveal that the next LEGO Cuusoo set will be the Back to the Future Time Machine, based upon the LEGO Cuusoo project by m.togami and Sakuretsu.

"The final product is still in development in coordination with our licence partner, Universal Partnerships & Licensing. We'll show the final model and you’ll be able to order your own copy when it becomes available in mid-2013. This product has a broad, worldwide appeal."

Rather admirably, the creators have said they will donate the royalties they'll receive from product sales to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinsons Research.
