Lloyd Horne beat off over 100,000 children to emerge triumphant at the Grand Final of the National Top Trumps Schools Tournament
The Warrington schoolboy was handed the trophy by Sir Steve, who was the official ambassador for the 2012 Top Trumps Schools Tournament.
As well as the trophy and a host of games goodies, Lloyd now gets to row with Sir Steve on the River Thames later in the summer as part of a ‘money can’t buy’ sporting experience.
Sir Steve Redgrave offered: "Lloyd did fantastically to beat more than 100,000 schoolchildren. He is a very worthy champion and I now better get lots of practise in before we race on the River Thames."
Horne said: "This makes up for last week (when his team lost in the last minute to lose the Barclays Premier League title to arch rivals Manchester City.)
"I’m thrilled to bits. I can’t wait to row with Sir Steve Redgrave. He is a legend. I didn’t even think I would get to the Grand Final. I had one last practise on the train coming down with my mum and dad I beat them both."
Fiona Hortopp, Head of Marketing at Winning Moves UK – the owners and makers of the Top Trumps brand, commented: "Our hearty congratulations to Lloyd – he is a real champ. It’s the third year in a row a boy has won – and the third year on the bounce that the winning trophy has headed ‘north’ from London, venue for all three finals.
"2013 is a blank canvass. We may have the final in Manchester and who knows the trophy could head south. As regards a girl winning it we’re sure it will happen in the very near future."
The Grand Final was played on a special commemorative bumper version of Top Trumps, which features London 2012 medal hopefuls.
In the game are cards of scores of Olympians past and present. These cards enable you to ‘trump’ your opponents across a range of Olympic themes from ‘British Legends’ to ‘Paralympic Heroes’.
