Top Trumps crowns Britain's youngest champion

Eight-year-old Zack Barnett was awarded with the title during the grand finals, held at Chester Zoo.

An eight-year-old schoolboy has been crowned Britain’s youngest ever official Top Trumps champion.

Zack Barnett took home the title last weekend at Chester Zoo, where the grand finals were held, after beating thousands of other children.

During the grand final, Barnett was the youngest of 12 competitors and was presented with a trophy in recognition of his Top Trumps title.

“I can’t believe I have won,” said Barnett.

His dad, James Barnett, added: “He is a very quick learner and brilliant at strategy with games. It’s refreshing that so many youngsters have engaged in Top Trumps rather than be slaves to their smart phones.

“He has made friends playing and interacted face-to-face rather than behind a screen.”

A plaque will also be unveiled in Barnett’s name at the meerkat enclosure at Chester Zoo for the next twelve months, to mark the Top Trumps Schools Tournament theme of Amazing Animals.

Claire Simon, from Winning Moves UK, added: “Very many congratulations to Zack – our youngest ever winner. He was the youngest of the 12 contestants in the grand finals and one of the very youngest who entered the competition at the start, which involved lots of heats. What a remarkable achievement.

“We’re delighted to have teamed up with Chester Zoo for this year’s tournament. Just like Top Trumps, Chester Zoo is engaging, fun and educational, making them the perfect partner for our Awesome Animals theme.”
