Thumbs Up heads down under

Firm has opened it first office in the Oceania region, in Perth, Western Australia.

Currently one of the fastest growing advanced markets in the world, Australia now stands as the seventh ranked economy in the world by GDP per capita and is expected to grow even more quickly in the next five years. 

With a population of over 22 million, Thumbs Up decided that the country offers the ideal consumer base for its offering of gifts and gadgets. The company will trade under Trendtastic in the region.

Wojtek Kolan, business development director, Thumbs Up head office, UK, said: “Australia has had phenomenal growth over the past decade and its economy is very strong. There is currently a high level of consumer spending and so the chance to distribute our brand in this region presented itself at just the right moment. We are very pleased to have found the right partner to take the Thumbs Up brand down under.”

Darren Campbell, formerly of Firebox.com and now business development director of Thumbs Up Australia, explained: “Trendtastic is a distributer of unique gifts and innovative lifestyle products. We currently have a wide retail customer base which includes chain stores, mail order companies and internet web stores, and Thumbs Up provides us with just the right genre and range of products sought after by our retailers.’’ 

The latest office is in line with Thumbs Up’s ambitious global expansion strategy. To date, the company’s international presence includes offices in Germany and France servicing retailers in Germany, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria and Luxemburg; a distribution centre in the USA; and a recently added Dubai office to supply the MENA region.

Wojtek Kolan, originally from Perth, Australia predicts that by 2013, international business will make up 65 per cent of company turnover.

Campbell added: “Historically, we’ve observed that popular UK products also do very well in the Australasian markets as the mentality and consumer ethos is so similar.

"Considering Thumbs Up’s unique approach to the novelty gifts and gadgets industry and their continuing success in the UK and abroad, I’m confident that they will be equally profitable in Australia and am predicting big results from this affiliation.”
