Subbuteo kicks-off table football World Cup

Exhibition game marks the start of the table footy championships at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium.

Last Friday more than 300 of the world's top table football players from 20 different countries attended Manchester City's Etihad Stadium to take part in the 16th annual World Cup Sport Table Football.

During the event around 450 games of table football were played over the two day event.

To get the championships started a special Subbuteo exhibition match saw the former 'City player and club ambassador Paul Lake took on the five times open sport table football world champion Massimo Bolognino.

The new Subbuteo is distributed by Paul Lamond Games, under license from Hasbro.

Richard Wells, sales director of Paul Lamond Games said: "We are delighted that Paul Lake played Subbuteo at the World Cup Sport Table Football. As a former Manchester City player, he was the perfect person to mark the start of the championships.

"It was a nail-biting game with two football pros going head to head and it has certainly whet the appetite of Subbuteo fans for the new licensed team launches later this year."

Paul Lamond has reported strong sales since its launch and has welcomed new licensed teams including Manchester City and Celtic, which join existing licensed teams for Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool. New accessories to be launched this Autumn too include a Pitch set, a Fences set and Goals set.

Hasbro teamed up with NiV, the table football specialists, to help redevelop and relaunch Subbuteo across Europe this year, with Paul Lamond Games launching the first sets in the UK.
