China responds to apology from Mattel
The official English-language China Daily newspaper, Guangzhou Daily has said the apology will help to restore the country’s damaged export reputation.
“The apology, though delayed, should help dispel the suspicion American customers harbour against Chinese-made products and clean up the stain the recalls left on the innocent Chinese workers who make a living doing honest labour” the paper reported.
It was referring to the meeting between Mattel’s executive vice president for worldwide operations, Thomas Debrowski (pictured) and Li Changjiang, Chinese product safety chief (also pictured).
Debrowski admitted during the open meeting that the “vast majority of those products that were recalled were the result of a design flaw in Mattel’s design, not through a manufacturing flaw in China’s manufacturers”.
Debrowski was referring to the 17.4 million products recalled due to unsafe magnets.
The firm also admitted toys that may not have had excessive lead paint were taken off shelves. Even follow up inspections found part of the recalled toys complied with US standards.
“Our reputation has been damaged lately by these recalls. And Mattel takes full responsibility for these recalls and apologises personally to you, the Chinese people, and all of our customers who received the toys,” Debrowski said.
