Barbie sales hit £1m in May

Mattel: "We are seeing some fantastic momentum around the fashion doll category."

Barbie has sold £1 million worth of toys in the UK for the fifth consecutive month of 2012.

The Mattel brand is the only one to have sold over £1 million for every month of the year within the fashion dolls standard category, according to NPD data/Mattel.

Within the dolls supercategory, Barbie and Disney Princess also sold over £1 million in May.

“We are seeing some fantastic momentum around the fashion doll category at the moment and our plans for the rest of year will continue to build on this,” Mattel’s UK marketing manager for girls Emma Stowers told ToyNews.

“Barbie continues to be the nation’s favourite fashion doll and with the launch of our new online content ‘Barbie Life in the Dream house’ and our new DVD Princess and the Popstar now on sale, girls are really deepening their engagement with the brand.

“Disney Princess has also had a strong start to the year, Brave is just about to be released in UK cinemas and Cinderella coming next month means it’s still all to play for. We have a really strong product range to support this great entertainment.”

Mattel’s UK boss Geoff Walker previously told ToyNews that 2012 is the year for Barbie and Batman.
